Evolution of Sara Glater's Art Soup Studio
Teaching
Each of our lives holds a unique story worthy of voice. Often through art expression, we access our imagination and tell our tale.
I have worked as artist and educator since the 1970s. From the time I first held a pencil, I made pictures and wrote stories about my world.
After completing graduate degrees in printmaking and theater design, I was named Executive Director of The San Francisco Children’s Art Center. In 2000, I relocated and established a small Eugene based program, Art Soup; serving a multi-generational audience.
Basic as well as complex tasks are enhanced when undertaken with imagination. There is art in painting a wall as well as a canvass. We each think and feel in special ways. Our stories may hold wishes and bare wounds. Art expression can inspire pleasure and healing; sharpen focus on all aspects of life.
In my classes, new projects are presented regularly. Each reveals a surprising series of steps toward a happy result. Each includes unusual materials. None require any art experience. As students gain confidence, their pictures develop and so does the picture of their world. I work with students of all ages and a range of life experience including individuals living with special needs; developmental physical and emotional.
Sparking curiosity is a cherished teaching method. One day, long ago, I was block printing with young children. Matthew eagerly rubbed the back of his print, before revealing the image on its underside. I still hear his small voice and his big words as he looked up and asked, “Can I open the present now?” We all deserve the gift of self-expression.
I have long gathered unique finds and furnishings and have created an inviting studio. Set in the woods (5 minutes from downtown), it takes students as well as aesthetics into account. Reclaimed bakery racks mounted under long windows serve as work tables, antique traffic lights shine in multi-color, vintage postal cabinets house supplies, hemlock flooring, container plants, antique stained glass and skylights add warmth and light.
